Spooked !

Spooked
The leaves lay listless on a moonless night
A wolf howls, enough to give you the fright
The screech of insects and the hiss of snake
On your bed you lay restless and awake

Slow and steady shadows play on your wall
Some shrink down as others grow tall
Disturbed you rise, strolling across the room
A black cat gives presage that night approached its doom

You open the window, wind blows and curtains fly
An owl perches in attention on a tree near by
The only faint light is the gleam of the countless stars
At a distance a man stands, his face blemished by scars

The figure disappears in the blink of an eye
Your heart pauses and your mouth goes dry
“Chimera it was”, you say to yourself
To find a torch you move towards the shelf

You find the torch but the batteries are dead
As the mirror shows your reflection without your head
You are dismayed and your muscles twitch in shock
Behind you a small girl stands in bloodstained frock

You open your mouth to shout but you just stammer
The door opens, a man in hood walks in with a hammer
All you want is to run, but your muscles won’t budge
In the man’s eye you can feel an old grudge

The little girl stares at you with a creepy smile
This is what happens when graveyard is within a mile
As the seconds pass by, you wait for the man to strike
Your eyes fall on his nameplate and it reads Mike

You realize Mike was dead few months back
Now his ghost with hammer stands in your track
Just then the girl raises a knife to stab your chest
Mike vexed faces her and says “stop, you pest! “

But the placid girl unconcerned, strikes to kill
In one swish Mike hits and reduces her to nil
Stupefied and bewildered you stand
As the girls cadaver sinks itself into the sand

As the ghost departs an eerie silence surrounds
Night restores its noise with the wail of the hounds
You slide down the chair suppressing a yawn
Daunted and scared you wait for the dawn
