On Knowledge and Temptations of it's Powers!

Image
Acquiring knowledge is a life long process and sometimes one life isn't just enough for it. You may keep gaining knowledge for eons but you will never get hold of all of it. What is much more important than acquiring knowledge is the application of knowledge. What you do with what you know ?  There are only three options: 1. Do something good 2. Don't do anything 3. Do something bad Now, lets concentrate on point no. 3 and see what happens with some examples: Consider Guru Shukracharya - a brilliant mind, an accomplished tapasvi and a mighty sage but then he is hardly recognized and remembered for these qualities. We only remember him as Guru of Asuras/Daityas. You may say our mythology is harsh on him but it is harsh on everyone because it tests and probes the intentions behind actions of every character and also that's where the lessons lay. Guru Shukracharya spent all his acquired powers and knowledge for the upliftment of Asuras(the bad guys) a...

Stories From Around The World - Part #1

Image
The Story of Scheherazade The story goes that King Shahryar found out one day that his first wife was unfaithful to him. Therefore, he resolved to marry a new woman each day as well as behead the previous day's wife, so that she would have no chance to be unfaithful to him. He had killed 1,000 such women by the time he was introduced to *Scheherazade* the vizier's daughter. Scheherazade had perused the books, annals and legends of preceding Kings, and the stories, examples and instances of bygone men and things; indeed it was said that she had collected a thousand books of histories relating to antique races and departed rulers. She had perused the works of the poets and knew them by heart; she had studied philosophy and the sciences, arts and accomplishments; and she was pleasant and polite, wise and witty, well read and well bred. Against her father's wishes, Scheherazade volunteered to spend one night with the king. Once in the king's chambers, Scheherazade ...

Devouring of the Moon

Image
It was night, not particularly dark. One could say it was a grey night, definitely not a black night.  The crescent moon provided ample moonlight and the twinkling stars canvassed the night sky.  Darkness was further dispelled by rebounded street lights from afar. It was like any other night, nothing particularly charming or mysterious about it.  Hameed was lying on his back in the sand. He had just finished his supper that his mom had prepared. It was a everyday supper. Naan bread, lamb curry and lemon pickles. He lay there  looking at the crescent moon that appeared like it was hinged on some invisible cosmic thread.  In fact, he wasn't paying much attention to it. It was as if he was looking through it to something beyond. For a long time Hameed sat there ruminating about the game of marbles he had lost with Asif during the break hours of the school. Asif was never more skilled then Hameed at marble shooting but Hameed endured a streak of bad luck and h...

Planet X

The parks are empty, the roads deserted I wonder why my shadow is inverted Where have all the people gone? I wonder if I am stranded here alone I walk by the same old path The sound of silence is goth Trees stand lifeless with bare barks On the walls there are weird geometric marks The abandoned cars have become rusty and old Sky keeps changing its color from fuchsia to gold Is this a World? or it's mirror image As Shakespeare said, is it literally a stage! The malls are open, no guards to stop The stations are vacant, with none to hop The asphalt road seems black and thick The clock has reversed its direction of the tick I finally see a man, he seems distant A relief, sign of another life He approached me at a rapid pace When he came close, I saw his robotic face I recoiled and jeered "Who are you?" Welcome Jack!, I am T101 brand new The reply came sharp and clear It said, "I am a robot and Hello my dear!...

Concerning the Hobbit who faced the Dragon

Image
The tide was high it reached for sky The waves charged in upon the shore They swept and crept beneath the sand The sea stared back to ruin the land The thief of stealth was lost in wealth He had in mind a stone to find To search the stone he slid more deep Only to wake a dragon asleep The silence broke and from slumber it woke The time had come for the long sleep to end The earth shook beneath when dragon took a breath It breathed out fire and then came out smoke It found the thief who had a promise to keep When he  realized  his folly he tried to hide But dragon’s sense more powerful than any fence It caught the thief before he could leap The thief tiny and small, the dragon mighty and tall It was no match; Dragon had found its catch He stood aghast he was found at last He closed his eyes to feel the fiery blast The dragon stood in a magnanimous stance The Hobbit knew he had no chance To find the stone that shone s...

Draupadi's Lament

Image
I pray to thee, oh! My dear lord! Please save me from this fraud Strength of my men is lost Their hearts are now sealed in frost They now stand head held low Shattered by Shakuni’s blow Couldn’t they see the deceit? Couldn’t they decide to forfeit? Look, what the desire has cost My honor is about to be lost Oh! My dear lord, I only have you Save me soon, minutes are few Mighty Bhim can’t move an inch While, to my garb I desperately clinch Arjun’s aim is no more the same Yudhisthir failed in an unfair game Oh! My dear lord my strength is weak I pray to thee, save this meek I am being stripped in front of all Crowd is pleased watching Pandava’s fall Now, I have very less to hide In shame five men watch plight of their bride Oh! My dear lord, I can no more wait Come save me before it’s too late This is a horrendous crime Repercussions will be soon seen in time My men will prepare to retaliate In their anger Kaurava’s kingd...

A murder in cold blood An act of extreme violence Everyone stood still and watched A man dying in complete silence The murdere looked around The victim lay motionless on the ground His eyes showed no remorse nor fear He didn’t care if this act could bring smear His hand held a scimitar dripping blood The dead body had none to enshroud He walked through crowd, not in haste The dripping blood was all he wanted to taste Everyone stood still, head held low Except a child who didn’t lower his gaze His fists tightened, his eyes glowed with anger People around him held him from moving any longer When the murderer left People came together and wept Some came ahead and buried the dead Everyone retreated to save their own head Storm and rain embrace the night The child awake remembering the dreadful sight He wondered why none came ahead to stop The terrible crime committed in daylight The sheriff’s came but everyone kept quiet ...

The Gambler's Night

Image
The dictionary defines gambler as a person who is willing to take the risk in hope of a desired result. A risk-taker is a gambler. A gambler doesn't necessarily meet success every time. Loss is always expected; the undesired result. It was sometime during the month of May, summer vacations were on but Sainik school had called back its pupils for early onset of classes. The campus was empty except for the final year batch. The city of Bijapur bathed in the intense heat of blazing sun. The air near the surface of earth was so hot that it often resulted in mirages on the black velvety asphalt road. The days were hot; the nights brought relief with occasional rains and cool breeze. It was not an ordinary night. It was raining hard and fast and it made a rhythmic sound as it splashed on the window panes. Mike and Saty were in no mood to study, they were sitting near the window and discussing about the smallest route that they could take in this rain to reach Reshma’...

The Story of Chindi Chor

Image
This blog is written to let you all know about the story behind the concept of “Chindi Chor". Chindi Chor is one who eats all the low budget snacks usually present in mobile stores or small Kirana shops present in the narrow streets of an underdeveloped town. These snacks usually consist of nuts (vatani) which come in various colours like red, green & yellow. I even don't know the English names of these snacks so let me put there Desi(Indian, more specifically North Karnataka) names: Papdi, Kurbaani(Habib brand), Maharaja Badaang, Chakli etc. These usually came at a price of 1 to 2 Rupees when Chindi Chor(The main protagonist of this article) first started eating them. At present their costs have risen up to 5 Rs. Did you all know why he fell in love with such products and ended up practically endorsing them and being their brand ambassador? Well, let me tell you how it began and how it became his obsession and how still he continues to eat them whenever and wherev...
